Bukola Ogunsola’s ‘Something About the Briggs’ Cast Celebrate Family Ties

The premiere of ‘Something About the Briggs’ was a celebration of the deep emotional ties that define family. For writer and director Bukola Ogunsola, the premiere was a dream realised. She shared how ‘Something About the Briggs’ had been a five-year journey filled with challenges before finally coming to fruition. Initially conceived half a decade ago, the film faced several setbacks before finally making it to the big screen. “This is a dream come true,” she said. “I wanted to do this five years ago, but life had other plans. Now, to see it all come together like this is overwhelming.” Ogunsola, known for her previous work ‘Happy Father’s Day’, emphasised the importance of family in her storytelling. “If you can get it right on the family front, our society will be a better place,” she stated passionately.

The film explores love, commitment, and the tensions that arise when personal desires collide with family expectations The protagonist, played by Daniel Etim Effiong, finds himself at a crossroads where his love life and family responsibilities clash, forcing him to make life-altering decisions. He described the film as “brilliant” and highlighted the significance of making choices that impact one’s destiny. His on-screen partner, Ariyike ‘Dimples’ Owolagba, spoke about her character Sophie Briggs’ personal growth. “You have to be open to love, knowing you might get hurt,” she reflected. “That’s part of life. Fear only holds you back.” Her journey highlights themes of emotional growth and resilience, showing how facing one’s fears can lead to profound personal transformation.

Stan Nze, who plays the controversial Richard Briggs, acknowledged his character’s flaws and the lessons audiences could learn. “The movie is a mirror to society,” he said. “It forces you to reflect and ask, ‘Am I like this?’ and hopefully, if you are, you change.”

Beyond the emotional depth of the film, the premiere was also a celebration of the cast’s camaraderie. Elma Mbadiwe, who plays Nina Briggs, revealed the bond she formed with her fellow actors. “There was no classism, no airs—just vibes on vibes,” she said with a smile. Kenneth Okolie, who plays Jason Briggs, echoed this sentiment, sharing how Rita Dominic’s apartment became the unofficial after-set hangout spot, filled with food, laughter, and reflections on their performances.

The film’s stunning costumes were another highlight of the evening, with lead costume designer Yolanda Okereke revealing that every outfit was custom-made for the film. “We didn’t buy anything off the rack,” she shared proudly. “It was blood, sweat, and tears, but seeing it on screen makes it all worth it.” Every outfit contributed to the authenticity and elegance of the film’s world.

The film also featured veterans like Bukky Wright and Iyabo Ojo, whose performances added weight to the narrative. Wright, who plays a troublesome mother-in-law, spoke about the unintended consequences of her character’s actions. “Sometimes people do harm without realising it,” she said. “But in-laws need to respect boundaries and let couples build their own lives.”

Ojo, in her signature candid style, didn’t hold back when asked about her stance on in-laws living with newlyweds. “Against! They should give their children space!” a sentiment that many audience members resonated with.

More than just a family drama, ‘Something About the Briggs’ is a film that encourages reflection on the complexities of relationships and personal growth. It delivers a message that lingers long after the credits roll, reminding viewers of the delicate balance between love and obligation, tradition and modernity. With a cast that delivers heartfelt performances and a director dedicated to meaningful storytelling, this film is a milestone for Nollywood and a must-watch for audiences everywhere.
