WEBEK Studios Launches to Push Global African Storytelling

WEBEK Studios: Esse Akwawa, Bizzle Osikoya and Edith Nwekenta Launch New Studio

WEBEK Studios has officially launched as a film and TV company focused on bringing African stories to international audiences through strategic collaborations. Founded by industry professionals Esse Akwawa, Bizzle Osikoya, and Edith Nwekenta, the studio aims to connect African creatives with the global entertainment industry.

With a focus on film, television, and lifestyle content, WEBEK Studios is working with international networks, production houses, and distribution platforms to showcase African storytelling on a wider scale. Its debut feature film, ‘168 Hours,‘ reflects this mission, presenting African narratives with high production values. Written by British-Nigerian screenwriter Bola Agbaje, the project underscores the new studio’s commitment to content that resonates locally and internationally.

“At WEBEK Studios, we are not just creating content; we are working to redefine African storytelling,” said Esse Akwawa, CEO and Co-Founder. “Our goal is to ensure African narratives reach audiences across the world.”

Co-Founder and Creative Director Edith Nwekenta emphasised the importance of authentic representation, stating, “We want to highlight the richness and diversity of African culture while making sure our stories connect with global viewers.” Akwawa and Nwekenta both worked at Accelerate Studios, with Akwawa leading the organization while Nwekenta was charged with heading the production.

Director of Partnerships and Co-Founder Abiodun Osikoya, popularly known as Bizzle Osikoya, highlighted the studio’s approach to collaboration. “By working with key players in Hollywood, the UK, and beyond, we are creating opportunities for African creatives to reach new markets,” he said. Osikoya is the founder of The Plug Entertainment, a management, music distribution, licencing, and publishing company.

Beyond content creation, the company is launching initiatives to mentor and train aspiring filmmakers, particularly young women, to support a more inclusive industry. By leveraging partnerships within the African diaspora, the studio aims to expand the reach of African content into major global markets.
