'Oversabi Aunty’s' ₦1 Billion Breakthrough Leads a January Box Office Still Ruled by December Hits

‘Oversabi Aunty’ Joins the One Billion-Naira Club as Fourth Highest-Grossing Film

‘Oversabi Aunty’, the Nollywood dramedy directed by Toyin Abraham, has officially crossed the ₦1 billion mark at the box office, becoming the fourth highest-grossing Nollywood film of all time, according to recent cinema performance data.

Figures from the latest box office report show that the film has recorded a flash total gross of ₦1,015,717,453, achieved within six weeks of release. The milestone places ‘Oversabi Aunty’ behind only three other Nollywood titles (‘A Tribe Called Judah’,Everybody Loves Jenifa’ and ‘Behind the Scenes’) in box office history.

The achievement is particularly significant, as the film marks Toyin Abraham’s first directorial project for the big screen, representing a major career milestone for the actress and producer, who has long been regarded as one of Nollywood’s most commercially reliable names.

Released in December 2025, Oversabi Aunty has maintained strong box office momentum across Nigerian cinemas. On the weekend of January 23–25, the film earned ₦40.1 million, bringing its cumulative admissions to over 175,000 cinema-goers, further underscoring its sustained audience appeal weeks after release.

The film tells the story of Toun, an overly involved church woman whose attempts to “help” those around her spiral into a chain of comedic and emotional consequences. By blending humour with everyday social realities, the film explores themes of boundaries, faith, and interpersonal relationships in contemporary Nigerian life.

‘Oversabi Aunty’ features an ensemble cast that contributed to its wide appeal, including Toyin Abraham, Mike Ezuruonye, Efe Irele, Jemima Osunde, Tana Adelana, Damilola Adegbite, Queen Nwokoye, and Ovy Godwin. The combination of established stars and familiar screen faces helped draw audiences across multiple demographics.

The film’s success comes amid a strong period for Nollywood at the box office, with local productions increasingly competing with international titles for screen space and audience attention. Its performance further highlights the growing commercial strength of Nigerian films and the expanding influence of female filmmakers in the industry.

As cinema attendance continues to rise and box office benchmarks are pushed higher, ‘Oversabi Aunty’s’ ₦1 billion gross stands as both a commercial landmark and a defining moment for Toyin Abraham’s evolution as a filmmaker  and for Nollywood’s ongoing box office resurgence.
