‘Behind the Scenes’ Tops January Box Office As ‘Oversabi Aunty’ Eyes ₦900m

‘Behind the Scenes’ continued its record-breaking run at the box office last weekend, anchoring the market as cinemas recorded an expected post-holiday slowdown. According to NGA Box Office, while the festive rush has ended, overall performance remains strong, driven largely by December holdovers.

“I think it went really okay,” NGA Box Office said in its weekly commentary. “Of course, we’re going to have a sharp drop from last weekend because the holidays were officially over.”

Despite the dip, early January figures continue to outperform the same period last year. Box office revenue currently stands at ₦1.6 billion, up from ₦1.1 billion at this point in 2025, representing a 45–46% increase. Admissions have also climbed to over 260,000, compared to 210,000 in the same period last year. “So box office is still very healthy,” NGA Box Office noted, attributing the performance to strong holdovers carrying momentum into the new year.

Leading the market once again is Funke Akindele’s ‘Behind the Scenes’, which topped the weekly chart in its fifth week with ₦167.4 million from 27,969 admissions. The film’s lifetime gross has now reached ₦2.103 billion, marking a historic milestone. “We had Behind the Scenes just dropping by 21%, which is very, very fair and decent,” NGA Box Office said. “That’s what you want your blockbusters to be doing around this season.”

The film has now become the first title in West Africa to gross over ₦2 billion unadjusted for inflation. From an admissions perspective, NGA Box Office says the film is already climbing the all-time rankings and is expected to cross another major benchmark. “When you’re looking at it from an admissions-wise perspective, I think it’s up to number six or number seven,” the commentary added, noting expectations that the film will surpass 400,000 admissions.

Holding firmly in second place is Toyin Abraham’s ‘Oversabi Aunty’, which grossed ₦79.9 million in its fourth week, bringing its cumulative total to ₦863.6 million. NGA Box Office expects the film to continue performing strongly throughout January. “I also expect ‘Oversabi Aunty’ to continue holding onto that second position and doing well over the January period,” NGA Box Office said.

‘Avatar: Fire and Ash’ also delivered a solid performance in its fourth week, grossing ₦39.6 million and pushing its lifetime total to ₦547.5 million. “It also had a very good hold, dropping just 48%,” NGA Box Office noted. Among new and lower-ranked releases, ‘Greenland 2: Migration’ debuted with ₦10 million, while Niyi Akinmolayan’s ‘Colours of Fire’ and ‘Anaconda’ rounded out the top six with ₦8.4 million and ₦7.1 million, respectively.

Overall, the week’s chart reflects a box office still anchored by December releases, a trend NGA Box Office believes is setting the tone for a strong and resilient start to the year.
