“Trailer for Osamede Offers a Glimpse Into Benin’s Past”

‘Osamede’ Heads to Silicon Valley African Film Festival

The historical epic ‘Osamede’ is set to make its U.S. festival debut at the Silicon Valley African Film Festival in California. Directed by James Omokwe and executive produced by Lilian Olubi, the film brings to life the story of a young orphaned girl who must embrace her destiny and rise as the hero of the Benin Kingdom in its darkest hour.

Written by Lolo Eremie, ‘Osamede’ stars Ivie Okujaye in the title role, with William Benson, Lexan Aisosa Peters, Tosin Adeyemi, Etinosa Idemudia, Paul Obazele, Lancelot Oduwa Imasuen and Alexander Bud rounding out the cast. The project marks another significant step for Nollywood on the global stage, following the film’s showcase at Afro Cannes earlier this year.

The journey of ‘Osamede’ is one of remarkable transformation. What began as a stage play has now evolved into a feature film with international reach. For Omokwe, the decision to adapt the story for the screen was about scale and accessibility, bringing a story rooted in the traditions and history of the Edo people to wider audiences at home and abroad.

He describes the film as more than just a historical retelling but as a spotlight on the extraordinary journey of a female hero, reclaiming her rightful place in a society where women’s voices and images have often been overshadowed in a male-dominated world. For him, it is a story of resilience, strength, and empowerment; a gift and tribute to the Edo people and a legacy for Nigerians and Africans across the globe.

For executive producer Lilian Olubi, the project is deeply personal. She has said she believes the story of ‘Osamede’ was given to her by God, a conviction that has guided her involvement from its earliest stages to its international festival circuit run. Her determination to bring the film to life has been central to its progress, helping transform a local idea into a work now being recognised abroad.

Earlier this year, ‘Osamede’ was screened at Afro Cannes, where it attracted attention for its ambitious storytelling and fresh approach to historical cinema. Its selection for the Silicon Valley African Film Festival adds to the film’s momentum and highlights a growing appetite for authentic African stories told with scale and vision. For Nollywood, these festival appearances are not just about screenings but about building bridges, connecting Nigerian stories with global audiences, distributors, and industry professionals. Films like ‘Osamede’ serve as cultural ambassadors, presenting Nigerian heritage in ways that resonate across borders.

As ‘Osamede’ prepares for its California outing, the cast and crew are keenly aware of what the moment represents. For Omokwe, it is the chance to showcase Nigerian history and culture on a new stage. For Olubi, it is the fulfilment of a vision she believes was divinely inspired. And for the actors, it is the opportunity to embody a story that celebrates resilience and destiny.

The Silicon Valley African Film Festival, known for spotlighting African filmmakers and stories, offers the perfect platform for ‘Osamede’. Its inclusion is both recognition of the film’s achievement and a testament to Nollywood’s growing role in global cinema. With its origins on the stage, its heart in Edo history, and its eyes now on international audiences, ‘Osamede’ is poised to leave a lasting mark, not just as a film, but as a story that carries culture, heritage, and vision far beyond Nigeria’s borders. The festival will run from 9 October to 12 October, 2025.
