HardFacts Studios Announces ‘The Bitter Feminist’ Docudrama Series

“The Bitter Feminist” is a term that many Nigerian internet users are familiar with. It is usually used to berate feminists fighting for equal rights. Feminists have since sought to co-opt the term, making it their own. The latest docudrama from HardFacts Studios—’The Bitter Feminist’—does the same.

The series is the brainchild of Daniel Chukwuemeka and Ijeoma Chinonyerem. ‘The Bitter Feminist’ is a compelling narrative exploring the challenges, stereotypes, and systemic oppression women face in Nigeria and sub-Saharan Africa. The five-episode series casts a light on the prevailing nature of misogyny in our society. It examines the intersectionality of feminism through a powerful narrative hinged on Ringret, a young woman from northern Nigeria who survived rape and forced marriage.

“This project is significant to us,” says Ijeoma Chinonyerem, co-creator of the series. “It’s about giving voice to the women whose stories often go unheard and challenging the narratives perpetuating inequality. We hope ‘The Bitter Feminist’ sparks conversations and inspires real change.”

‘The Bitter Feminist’ puts women at the forefront of the fight for gender equality by amplifying their voices as they demand a radical re-evaluation of societal structures rooted in patriarchy. The series dives into the lives of women who identify as feminists, giving us a closer look at their defiance and how they are rejecting traditional gender roles and societal expectations.

Through a series of candid interviews combined with performances from Precious Okoh, Hoomsuk Jibrin, Wapi Black, and Debrah Jibrin, the docudrama illuminates the cultural, religious, and socio-economic factors influencing the struggle for gender equality. Each episode addresses a critical issue: pervasive misogyny, wherein every gender-inspired bias stems from. The episodes also tackle the devastating consequences of child marriage, complexities of consent, restrictive gender roles, and the realities of transactional sex.

At the core of ‘The Bitter Feminist,’ Directed by Priye Diri and produced by Isaac Newton Akah, is an examination of cultural and institutional barriers perpetuating gender oppression while celebrating women’s unwavering determination to challenge these norms. Ringret’s story is one of many that embodies the power of female resilience and resistance.
