Gold Lilies Productions has released the official teaser for ‘Osamede,’ a Nigerian historical fantasy set in the final days of the Benin Empire.
A first look at Osamede introduces a chosen one destined to protect an ancient relic in the mystical heart of the 1897 Benin Empire. At the centre of the story is Osamede, a young orphan who discovers she is the prophesied guardian of the Aruosa stone, a sacred object of spiritual and political significance. The film’s tagline reads, “She’s the chosen one. Her power awakens. An ode to womanhood and African identity.”
Directed by James Omokwe (Itura, Cheta’M, Ajoche), Osamede explores themes of power, heritage, and transformation through the lens of epic fantasy. The film stars Ivie Okujaye Egboh in the title role, supported by Lexan Aisosa Peters, William Benson, Tosin Adeyemi (‘My Father’s Shadow’), and Lancelot Oduwa Imasuen.
The teaser debuted at the Cannes Marché du Film in May, where it received early attention from industry observers. Kenneth Gyang, director of Òlòtūré, called it “a beautiful film” after attending the screening.
Executive producer Lilian Olubi says the project aims to present African mythology to wider audiences using the language of fantasy and adventure. “This teaser captures the essence of what we’re bringing to global audiences. It’s African mythology told through the lens of epic fantasy, celebrating both our heritage and the power of African women.”
Osamede is slated for theatrical release in Q4 2025 and will be distributed by Nile Entertainment Group, led by Moses Babatope. Babatope has previously secured international film deals with Disney, Netflix, Prime Video, and Warner Bros. Speaking on the project, he said, “It’s rare to find a film that honours cultural heritage while delivering the kind of storytelling that can travel.”
