A Danfo Christmas by Sebastian Ukwa

Sebastian Ukwa’s ‘A Danfo Christmas’ Leans into the Chaos of Christmas Whilst Celebrating Family Ties

The holiday season is often synonymous with family gatherings, shared laughter, and the occasional drama. In ‘A Danfo Christmas’ by Sebastian Ukwa, the seventh feature in the First Features series, this dynamic is brought to life with the vibrancy and chaos that Lagos life offers. Produced by First Features in collaboration with Natives Filmworks and Michelangelo Productions, the film promises a hearty blend of comedy, drama, and emotional depth.

‘A Danfo Christmas’ tells the story of a group of family members who have avoided returning home for Christmas for years—and with good reason. From bullying cousins to a critical mother-in-law and reminders of past failures, visiting family feels more like an endurance test than a holiday celebration. However, financial pressures and the challenges of navigating life in Lagos push them to attempt a long-overdue reunion.

The journey home, aboard the iconic Lagos danfo (yellow bus), is riddled with unexpected twists, laughs, and heartfelt moments, culminating in a story that reminds viewers of the importance of family and the resilience required to face life’s challenges together.

The film boasts a stellar cast, combining the talent of seasoned Nollywood actors and rising stars. Seun Kentebe, Valerie Odunukwe, Korede Lawal, Loveth Ogbene, and Myde Glover lead the ensemble, supported by industry veterans like Patrick Doyle and Carol King. Fresh talents such as Lydian John, Destiny David, and Martins Iwute also shine, adding authenticity and depth to the story.

Behind the scenes is Sebastian Ukwa, who directs this heartwarming tale, with a screenplay by Adeayo Sangowawa and story consultation by Paul S. Rowlston. The film’s visual and technical elements are brought to life by a team of experts, including Gideone Chukwu as the Director of Photography, Talatu Yelji handling costume design, Chinwelu C. Anyawu managing makeup, and Ava Momoh providing a musical score that complements the film’s emotional beats.

The production is shepherded by the experienced hands of Steve Gukas and Dotun Olakunri, with Steve Terungwa Lordye as the editor.

Scheduled for release on December 14, 2024, on Prime Video, ‘A Danfo Christmas’ captures the essence of what makes the holiday season special: the messy, unpredictable, yet deeply meaningful connections we share with those we call family.

As the seventh feature in the First Features series, the film not only adds to the growing repertoire of high-quality Nollywood storytelling but also highlights the everyday struggles and triumphs of Nigerian families in a relatable and entertaining way.
