The Fisherman: Yvonne Orji Backs Ghana’s Project After Historic Venice Premiere and UNESCO Wins

Yvonne Orji, the Emmy-nominated actress and comedian best known for HBO’s Insecure, has joined the Ghanaian fantasy-comedy ‘The Fisherman’ as executive producer, just as the film made a bold international statement at the 81st Venice Film Festival.

The whimsical film, directed and written by Ghanaian-American filmmaker Zoey Martinson, became Ghana’s first official selection at Venice and went on to win two major awards: the Fellini Medal and the Enrico Fulchignoni Prize from UNESCO. Its distinct blend of magical realism, humour, and heartfelt storytelling is earning the film global recognition and now, a major industry boost.

At the heart of ‘The Fisherman’ is Atta Oko, a retired fisherman whose quiet life is disrupted when he begins receiving unsolicited advice from a sarcastic, talking fish. Together with three rebellious youths chasing dreams of financial independence, Atta leaves his small village for the city of Accra, embarking on a journey full of chaos, charm, and second chances.

Orji joins the project through her production company, in & thru, and says the film’s message struck a personal chord. “Zoey is an extraordinary filmmaker with a distinct voice, and I’m honoured to champion her vision for ‘The Fisherman’,” Orji said. “As a first-generation Nigerian immigrant, this story felt personal, yet relatable. It carries both emotional weight and cultural relevance.”

Martinson, whose work spans HBO Max, Hulu, Showtime, and Mzansi Magic DStv, brings her sharp international sensibility and background in comedy to the film, marking an assured feature debut.

The ensemble cast includes Ricky Adelayitar (Beasts of No Nation), Endurance Grand, William Lamptey, Kiki Romi, Adwoa Akoto (I May Destroy You), and Dulo Harris (Tales From The Big Apple). Produced by Luu Vision Media, the film is backed by producers Kofi Owusu Afriyie and Korey Jackson (Godfather of Harlem).
