Ekpenyong developed his acting skills during his NYSC service at NTA, working under director Tade Ogidan. He received training in Drama, Script-Writing, Voice-Over, Producing, and Presenting in 1987 and 1988. After NYSC, he appeared in the soap opera Ripples as airline pilot Hassan Suleman. Later, he transitioned to home videos as the Nigerian movie industry grew.
