The premiere of Lateef Adedimeji-led ‘Lisabi: The Uprising,’ a historical drama, brought film enthusiasts and industry figures together at Circle Mall in Lekki, Lagos, to celebrate both Nigerian cinema and a historical figure. The film tells the story of Lisabi, the revered Egba warrior who led his people in their fight for freedom—a legacy that has long been overlooked.
Lateef Adedimeji, who also served as the executive producer of the Netflix original, portrayed the titular role of Lisabi. His performance captured the warrior’s strength and leadership, bringing to life Lisabi’s dual nature as both a strategist and a fighter.
Niyi Akinmolayan directed ‘Lisabi: The Uprising’ to strike a balance between action and storytelling while offering a compelling visual representation of important moments in the warrior’s life.
While the film stays true to its historical roots, Akinmolayan and the team took creative liberties to fill narrative gaps, introducing new characters played by Roseline ‘Liquorose’ Afije and Debo ‘Mr. Macaroni’ Adedayo. These additions enhanced the story, making it more engaging for contemporary audiences.
‘A Tribe Called Judah’ cinematographer Barnabas Emordi brought his fresh vision to the project, making his debut as the director of photography on an epic film.
The production team also incorporated AI technology to elevate key scenes, particularly in the battle sequences and landscape shots. This blend of traditional filmmaking and modern technology brought the story of Lisabi to the screen while preserving its cultural essence.
Stunt coordinator Adamson ‘Adamseffect’ Ibrahim, who coordinated the battle sequences, said he was influenced by historical studies into traditional Yoruba combat. His efforts contributed to the fight scenes’ authenticity.
Juliana Olayode, who plays one of the Oloris (Alaafin’s wives), shared her personal connection to the story. She recalled learning about Lisabi during her secondary school years, making her role in the film a full-circle moment—bringing to life a legend she had admired since her youth.
The premiere ended on a high note, with audience members like Omowunmi Dada applauding the cast and crew for their efforts. As an Egba woman, she expressed pride in seeing an Egba hero brought to life on screen.
The event underscored the importance of telling African stories, with Lateef Adedimeji urging for more such narratives: “There are so many heroes’ stories we need to tell. The world needs to see how rich and diverse our culture is.”
‘Lisabi: The Uprising’ offers a solid start in showcasing the depth of that cultural heritage and will begin showing exclusively on Netflix on September 27, 2024.
