FilmOne Confirms ₦2.5bn Box Office Milestone for Funke Akindele’s ‘Behind The Scenes’

FilmOne Entertainment has confirmed that ‘Behind The Scenes’, the latest feature from Funke Akindele, has crossed ₦2.5 billion at the box office, setting a new all-time record for theatrical releases in West Africa.

According to the distributor, the film has grossed ₦2,505,882,930 to date, overtaking Akindele’s previous record-holder, ‘Everybody Loves Jenifa’, which ended its run in 2024 with ₦1,882,549,548. The milestone marks the highest box office performance ever recorded for a film in the region and pushes the commercial ceiling for theatrical releases.

The film has also posted strong results internationally, earning approximately $440,000 from cinemas in the United Kingdom, the United States, and Canada. With that figure, Behind The Scenes now stands as the highest-grossing Nollywood title across international theatrical markets.

Kene Okwuosa, Group CEO of Filmhouse Group (FilmOne Entertainment, Filmhouse Cinemas, and FilmOne Studios) described the performance as a turning point for the theatrical business.

“The performance of Behind The Scenes represents a defining moment for FilmOne Entertainment and for the theatrical ecosystem,” Okwuosa said. “It shows what is possible when ambitious storytelling is matched with disciplined, globally aligned distribution. We are proud to be scaling African stories in ways that compete credibly on the world stage.”

The release also marks the first time FilmOne Entertainment has overseen distribution for a Funke Akindele film across both domestic and major international markets. Previous releases were handled under a domestic-only mandate, with overseas territories managed separately. The unified strategy allowed for tighter coordination across regions and more consistent execution.

As the film’s global distributor, FilmOne led a coordinated rollout across Nigeria, the UK, Canada, and North America, aligning release dates, cinema partnerships, and diaspora-focused marketing efforts. The approach helped sustain momentum beyond its initial opening and strengthened the film’s visibility across multiple territories.

Ladun Awobokun, Chief Content Officer at FilmOne Entertainment, said the results reflect the impact of deliberate market planning.

Behind The Scenes demonstrates how these stories can travel when supported by intentional strategy and deep market understanding,” she said. “This performance reinforces our commitment to building durable pathways for African content to succeed at scale.”

Akindele’s recent box office successes, including A Tribe Called Judah (2023) and Everybody Loves Jenifa (2024), had already established billion-naira benchmarks for theatrical releases. Behind The Scenes builds on that momentum, benefiting from FilmOne’s expanded global mandate and surpassing all previous records.

As international theatrical exposure continues to expand, the film’s performance offers a clear case study in how coordinated distribution and global execution can translate local stories into sustained commercial success
