Inside Don Julio’s AMVCA 2026 Takeover With This Year’s Big Winners

The Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards has grown far beyond an awards ceremony. It now stands as one of the continent’s most visible cultural stages where film, fashion, and storytelling intersect in a shared moment of recognition.

At the 12th edition, Don Julio stepped in as headline sponsor with a clear intention: not just to associate with the night but to shape how it was experienced.

Rather than a conventional brand presence, Don Julio built its activation around The Don’s Table, a curated space designed to spotlight the discipline and years of work behind award-winning careers. Positioned as both a celebration and a pause for reflection, the space became one of the evening’s most distinct touchpoints.

The brand sponsored three of the night’s biggest categories: Best Actor, Best Supporting Actress, and Best Film, extending each win beyond the stage into a more intimate moment of recognition.

Hosted by Uti Nwachukwu, The Don’s Table brought winners into conversation about their journeys and the craft behind their work.

Uzor Arukwe took home Best Actor for ‘Colours of Fire’, a win that drew strong reactions in the room, with many framing it as long overdue after years of steady performances. Linda Ejiofor-Suleiman won Best Supporting Actress for her performance in ‘The Herd’, recognised for her range and consistency across roles.

For Best Film, My Father’s Shadow earned the top prize, with Funmbi Ogunbawo and Wale Davis acknowledged for a project that reflects the increasing global reach of African storytelling.

Each winner received an engraved bottle of Don Julio 1942, a symbolic gesture that leaned into the idea of permanence and earned recognition.

Another standout moment came during the Don Julio toast, led by Bovi Ugboma, which turned into a broader celebration of the people driving the industry forward.

On the red carpet, the brand extended its presence through its Fashion Icon of the Night spotlight. Uche Montana made an appearance in a custom Tubo Bereni look inspired by a phoenix, leaning into themes of transformation and reinvention that mirrored the night’s wider energy.

What set Don Julio apart at this year’s AMVCA was its shift away from passive sponsorship into active participation. The brand is built around people, process, and craft, aligning itself with the same values the awards aim to recognise.

As the AMVCA continues to expand its cultural footprint, moments like these point to how brands are beginning to engage more intentionally with the ecosystem – less as observers and more as contributors to the experience itself.
